Because a through rail route no longer exists to permit direct service to Phoenix from the west, Maricopa is Amtrak's access to Arizona's largest city. Downtown Phoenix is roughly 25 miles north on state route 347. The Maricopa station is actually a classic dome-observation passenger car named Silver Horizon, which operated on the pre-Amtrak California Zephyr between Chicago and Oakland/San Francisco.
