In past years, Mineola was a railroad terminal for crews of the Texas & Pacific Railway, and two railroad hotels, Beckham (north) and the Carleton-Bailey (south, abandoned) were populated by train crews laying over between trips. Today Mineola is a burgeoning bed-and-breakfast spot, with a revitalized downtown area that houses a variety of restaurants, antique shops and other businesses. Just south and west of the depot, look for numerous horseshoe throwing pits - a competition from the past which is enjoying a resurgence in popularity. Mineola is also Amtrak's gateway to Canton, site of the region's largest flea market, First Monday Trade Days.

Mineola has recently restored its Amtrak station to its original appearance as built by the Texas & Pacific railroad. Although station is unstaffed, waiting area is open for all train arrivals and departures.
