The silver domed Macoupin County Courthouse is visible west of the station. This "Million Dollar Courthouse" once held the distinction of being the largest courthouse in the United States, and was constructed at a time when Carlinville had aspirations of becoming the state capital. When Standard Oil operated a coal mine here, miners commuted from Springfield on shuttle trains, or lived in company-owned Sears & Roebuck mail-order houses here. Today 152 of the original 156 houses make up Carlinville's historic "Standard Addition, " the largest collection of Sears homes anywhere.
