Once a thriving river port, Alton was the scene of the seventh and last of the Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858. Today, Alton attracts visitors with numerous museums, outdoor recreation opportunities, and a riverboat casino. It is estimated that 150-450 American bald eagles make their winter home in the limestone cliffs that line the Mississippi River around Alton.
